How to Buy from 1688 When You Don't Live in China

1688 is cheaper than Alibaba but built for domestic buyers. Here is how overseas buyers actually order from it, step by step.

1688.com is Alibaba Group's domestic wholesale marketplace. The same factories that list on Alibaba.com often list on 1688 too, usually at prices 10–40% lower, because 1688 is aimed at Chinese resellers who already know how to negotiate, pay in RMB and arrange their own freight. The catch is that the site assumes you are one of them.

What stands in the way

The three realistic routes

1. A sourcing agent

An agent finds and vets suppliers, pays them in RMB, receives goods at their warehouse, inspects, consolidates and ships to you. This is the most common route for orders above a few hundred dollars and the only sensible one when you need several suppliers combined into one shipment.

2. A forwarding / purchasing service

You pick the exact listing, the service buys it as-is and forwards it. Cheaper than a full agent, but nobody is checking whether the supplier is any good — you are.

3. Doing it yourself

Possible if you have a Chinese contact who can pay and receive. It saves fees, but disputes, damaged goods and wrong colours become your problem with no leverage.

A practical workflow

  1. Search with Chinese keywords. Translate your product name, then refine with the words sellers use (e.g. 厂家直销 "factory direct", 源头工厂 "source factory").
  2. Use image search. 1688's camera icon finds the same item across dozens of sellers. Sort and compare — identical photos often come from one factory with many resellers.
  3. Read the tiered price table. The headline price usually applies to a larger quantity than you think. Check the MOQ (起批量) for each tier.
  4. Check seller signals: years on the platform, whether it's a verified manufacturer (实力商家 / 源头工厂 badges), repeat-purchase rate (回头率) and response rate.
  5. Ask for real photos and a video of the actual stock, not the catalogue images.
  6. Order a sample before committing to volume, shipped to your agent's warehouse.
  7. Factor in domestic shipping (usually ¥5–20 per parcel to the warehouse) and international freight before you call it cheap.

When 1688 isn't the right choice

If you need custom branding, certifications (CE, FCC, UKCA), or the supplier to handle export, Alibaba.com or a direct factory relationship may cost a little more per unit but save a lot of friction. 1688 shines for off-the-shelf goods, small-batch testing and price benchmarking.
